Short has lived in Austin, Texas for his whole life. After graduating from the University of Texas in 1987, he turned pro. For the first ten years, he was a club professional and did not start playing on the pro golf Tours until 1997. He played on various mini Tours for a number of years. His breakout year came in 2003 when he finished 30th on the Nationwide Tour standings and thereby earning partial PGA Tour status. This came as a result of one runner-up finish as well seven top 10s.
His rookie season on the PGA Tour came in 2004 as a 40 year old. He captured his first and only PGA Tour win in 2005 when he captured the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas after a play-off with Jim Furyk. This was one of two career top 10 finishes Short had in his career; the second also came that season when he finished in a tie for 4th place at the John Deere Classic. In what was his best season on Tour, he ended the year 75thon the money list.
Short played between the PGA and Nationwide Tours for a number of years before becoming eligible for the Champions Tour in 2014 and he won the Champions Tour Q School. He captured his first win in his rookie season at the Quebec Championship where he held off Scott Dunlap by one shot. He finished 16th on the money list in his rookie season. The win was one of seven top 10s Short had that year. So far in 2015, Short has had three top 10s in 13 events.
