After playing golf at the University of Tennessee, Gallagher turned pro after graduating in 1983. He earned a card for the 1984 PGA Tour season. He played 25 events in his rookie season, making the cut on 15 occasions. He registered one top 10 which came at the Miller High Life QCO where he finished in a tie for 8th place. Gallagher’s breakout season came in 1986 when he had three top 10 finishes including a 3rd place at the Tallahassee Open. He finished the season a then career best 107th on the money list. He came close to winning his first PGA Tour title in 1988 when he was runner-up at the Greater Milwaukee Open.

He captured his first PGA Tour win at the Greater Milwaukee Open in 1990. He beat Ed Dougherty and Billy Mayfair in a play-off. He had four other top 10s that season and finished the year 25th on the money list. Over the next five seasons, Gallagher had a total of eight runner-up finishes including finishing in a tie for 2nd at the 1992 PGA Championship. He won twice in the 1993 season. The first win came at the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic where he beat Chip Beck by two strokes after shooting a final round of 65. The biggest win of his career came at the Tour Championship at the end of that season when he won by one shot. He finished the season 4th in the standings. He won twice again in 1995, at the KMart Greater Greensboro Open and the FedEx St. Jude Classic both of which were one shot victories. He would have two runner-up finishes and a third place that season to end the year 8th on the money list.
Gallagher would not win again on Tour and lost his card in 2002. He played in one Ryder Cup, being part of the victorious United States team in 1993. He became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2011. He has played 72 events to date, registering four top 10s.
