Raised in Stillwater, Doug Tewell’s introduction to the game of golf came as a caddy. Tewell would go on to attend hometown Oklahoma State University where he first joined the Cowboy baseball team before switching to golf.

Tewell turned professional out of college in 1971 and became a member of the PGA Tour in 1975.

Tewell would win 4 times on the PGA tour. 1980 was a big season with two wins. His first career win was at Hilton Head Island where he won the Sea Pines Heritage Classic in a playoff over Jerry Pate. He also recorded top tens at the 1983 and 1986 PGA Championships.

Injuries cut Tewell’s PGA career short – he was impacted by left elbow problems at the age of 46.

Tewell made a successful comeback from injury and put together a more successful career on the Senior (Nationwide) Tour. His first win was a Major – the 2000 Senior PGA Championship. Tewell won every season from 2000 through 2004 amassing a total of 8 victories, including his second Senior Major, the Tradition in 2001.

In his early-60’s, Tewell began marketing a series of instructional videos encouraging players to adopt a “square to square” golf swing instead of the modern swing. As a golfer who battled multiple injuries during his career, the square to square swing is designed to put less stress on the back and joints and allow recreational golfers to make more consistent, solid contact. Arron Oberholser, a former PGA player and Golf Channel Commentator, joined Tewell as an advocate of the square to square method.
