Colbert had a successful college career at Kansas State University. He finished runner up in the NCAA Championship in 1964 and he turned pro shortly after graduating the following year. Colbert started paying on the PGA Tour in 1966. He claimed the first of eight PGA Tour wins in 1969 at the Monsanto Open Invitational. He shot four rounds in the 60s to win by two strokes. Two of his wins came after play-offs and Colbert had a lifetime play-off record of 2-0 on the PGA Tour. First, in the American Golf Classic in 1974 and secondly in 1983 when he beat Fuzzy Zoeller at the 6th play-off hole at the Colonial National Invitation.

He won twice in the 1983 season, first at the Colonial National Invitation and secondly at the Texas Open. His win in Texas was a five stroke win over Mark Pfeil with Colbert shooting an amazing score of 261 (66-62-66-67). This would be his last win on the PGA Tour. His best career finish in a Major Championship was at the US Open in 1971 at Merion Golf Club when Colbert finished in a tie for 3rd place.

Colbert was a very successful player on the Champions Tour having won 20 tournaments, including a Senior Major Championship. He joined the Tour in 1990 and won three times in his rookie season and also finished runner up on five occasions. He topped the money list in both 1995 and 1996 when he won four times and five times respectively. His sole Senior Major Championship victory came at the Ford Senior Players Championship in 1993 when he beat Raymond Floyd by a single stroke. His last win came in 2001 at the SBC Senior Classic.
