After a successful amateur career, the Australian turned pro in 1995. He started off playing mainly on the Australian Tour and won four times over next couple of years. The biggest of those wins was at the Australia Open in 1998 when he beat Peter Senior and Stuart Appleby by a stroke. In 1997, Chalmers won a card for the European Tour for the 1998 season having won the Challenge Tour Championship (Europe’s second tier Tour). He had a good rookie season, finishing 25th on the money list and qualified for his first ever Major Championship at the British Open. That fall, Chalmers attended PGA Tour Q School and duly won his card for the 1999 season.
In 34 events, he had seven top 25 finishes with his best being a tie for 10th at the Doral Ryder Open. He retained his card, finishing 114th on the money list (top 125 retain their card). He had a breakthrough season in 2000, registering five top 10s including a runner up finish at the Kemper Insurance Open. He also had what is currently his best finish in a Major Championship when he finished in a tie for 4th at the PGA Championship. He went on to finish 41st on the money list.
Chalmers began to play poorly after his 2000 season and lost his card in 2004. He played on the Nationwide Tour in 2005 and won his PGA Tour card after finishing 14th on the money list including a win at the Boise Open. He lost his card again the next season and played on the Nationwide for another two years. He has kept his card since 2009 but still has no win on Tour. His best finish in recent years was a runner up finish in 2009 at the Buick Open, finishing behind Tiger Woods. He did win the Australian Tour Order of Merit both in 2011 and 2014. He now has seven Australian Tour wins.
