Born in Waco, Texas, in 1943, Eichelberger first started playing golf when he was thirteen. He participated in programs provided at his family’s golf club. After finishing high school, he began studying at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where his golfing prowess continued to increase. He turned professional in 1966, a year after graduating.
Over his career Eichelberger has achieved a total of twelve victories, some on the PGA Tour, and some on the Champions Tour. During one winning performance, at the Emerald Coast Classic in 2002, he scored a hole in one on the 185 yard eighth hole.
Despite being born and brought up in Texas, Eichelberger lived in New Canaan, Connecticut, for most of his adult years. Later in his life, in 2003, Eichelberger moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he still lives, together with his wife and their twin son and daughter.
As of the end of 2014, Eichelberger had achieved four wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $1,173,210.
