Matteson was a very promising player at the start of his career. While at Georgia Tech, he won the 2002 NCAA Individual Championship. He turned pro in 2003 and quickly made it to the PGA Tour when he topped the money list on the Nationwide Tour in 2005. On the way leading the Tour in 2005, he broke the record for highest earnings in a single season on the Nationwide Tour.

He continued his upward progression when he won in his rookie season on the PGA Tour, capturing the Frys.com Open by one shot. While he had struggled for most of the season, in his last five tournaments of the 2006 season, Matteson managed to finish in the top ten in each of them. This culminated in him finishing the season 36th on the money list. This is still his highest finish on the money list to date.

He was fairly consistent for the next couple of years, finishing 73rd in 2007 and 89th in 2008 on the Tour money list. He managed to break the PGA Tour’s 36 hole record in 2009 at the Fry’s.com Open (Different tournament to the one he won in 2006) when he shot a staggering 61-61 for his Friday and Saturday rounds. He captured the title after beating Jamie Lovemark and Rickie Fowler in a play-off. He finished the season in 56th place on the money list. He struggled in 2010 and would have lost his card if it wasn’t for the two year exemption he had from winning the 2008 Fry’s.com Open as he finished the year at 128th on the money list.

In 2011 and 2012 Matteson lost out in play-offs to Michael Bradley in the Puerto Rico Open and to Zach Johnson in the John Deere Classic respectively. In 2013 he lost his card and had to go the Web.com Tour Finals to retain it for the 2014 season. He lost his card in 2014 after finishing 165th in the money list and is now playing events on the Web.com Tour and some PGA Tour events.
