Born in Plantation, Florida in 1993, Berger is the son of a father who was a professional tennis coach, and was head of men's tennis for the United States Tennis Association. If Berger hadn’t taken up golf it’s likely he would have been a tennis player. It wasn’t until Berger and his family moved to Jupiter, Florida, when he was about ten years old, that Berger began taking his love of golf more seriously, although he didn’t play high school golf. After graduating from high school, Berger continued to play golf while at Florida State University. In 2013, he finished in a tie for second place at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.
After completing his sophomore season, Berger turned professional. He qualified to play on the Web.com Tour in 2013, and he played four events on the tour. The following year he finished the season ranked 15th on the Web.com Tour, and qualified to play on the PGA Tour.
As of the end of 2014, Berger was yet to achieve a win on the PGA tour, but had amassed total prize money of $59,588.
