While at college, he was part of the team that won the bronze medal at the Summer Universiade, in 2011. While still an amateur he also played for the Mexican team at the Eisenhower Trophy in both 2010 and 2012.

After turning professional in 2013, Ortiz achieved a tie for 15th place at the Web.com Tour qualifying school, which qualified him to play on the Web.com Tour in 2014. Ortiz had some success in his first season on the Tour, winning for the first time at the Panama Claro Championship and for the second time, just weeks later, at the El Bosque Mexico Championship. After these two wins Ortiz entered the Top 200 of the World Rankings. The same year Ortiz finished in a tie for 65th place at his first PGA Tour event, the Memorial Tournament. Ortiz continued to have a successful season on the Web.com Tour, winning a third event, being voted Tour Player of the Year and gaining fully exempt status on the PGA Tour for 2014-2015.

Away from the course, Ortiz is a big fan of Real Madrid, in the world of soccer, and enjoys both beach and skiing holidays.

As of the end of 2014, Ortiz was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, having amassed total prize money of $12,834.
