Born in Daytona Beach, Florida William “Bud” Cauley did not play for a school golf team, as he was home schooled by his parents. This did not stop him from playing golf at a junior level. He was at one point ranked in the US top 5, and the World top 15. He played as part of the 2006 Junior Ryder Cup US team and the 2008 USA Junior World Golf Championships team. Cauley went on to play golf at the University of Alabama where he was one of the best golfers they had ever had. As an amateur, Cauley was part of the 2009 U.S. Walker Cup team. The same year he achieved his first collegiate victory, at the United States Collegiate Championship.
At the end of his junior year of College, Cauley qualified for the 2011 US Open; at this point he made the decision to turn professional. He finished in joint 63rd place at the US Open which meant that he gained a bypass to the second stage of qualifying school. This was a relatively successful start to his PGA Tour career for Cauley. He earned a season total prize money of $735,150 from just eight Tour starts. He avoided having to go to qualifying school, and went straight to the PGA Tour after College.

Cauley has gone on to achieve limited success on the PGA Tour since then. In 2012 he was in the World Top 100 at the end of July. 2013 saw him making the cut only ten times out of 24 starts. He finished in 18th place at the Web.com Tour Finals and retained his PGA Tour card for the following season.

As of the end of 2014, Cauley had yet to achieve a PGA Tour win, but had amassed total prize money of $3,601,213.
