Clampett was a keen golfer from a young age who based a lot of his early golf training on the book The Golfing Machine, by Homer Kelley. Clampett studied at Brigham Young University where he continued to excel at golf, being Collegiate Golfer of the Year twice and All-American three times. Clampett achieved several success during his amateur golf career, including wins at the Porter Cup, the Sunnehanna Amateur, and the Western Amateur.

After graduating from college Clampett turned professional in 1980, and embarked on a reasonably successful PGA Tour career. He only achieved one win, at the Southern Open in 1982, but he had numerous top ten finishes, and one joint third place finish at the US Open in 1982. After reaching the age of forty, Clampett played mostly on the Nationwide Tour, before becoming eligible to play on the Champions Tour at the age of fifty.

Away from playing golf, Clampett has achieved some success as an on-course reporter for CBS, both on television broadcasts and online webcasts. In addition, Clampett acted as lead golf analyst for Turner sports, between 1996 and 2007. Clampett has also remained involved with the sport as a golf course designer in recent years.

Away from golf, Clampett is a family man, who lives in North Carolina, together with his wife Marianna and their two children. Clampett also has three children from his first marriage. Clampett is a keen pilot, and has been flying regularly since 1987. He seems to have inherited this love from his father, Robert who was twice national air-race champion.

As of the end of 2014, Clampett had achieved one PGA Tour win, amassing prize money of $1,423,000.
