Born in Graham, Texas in 1966, Estes was raised in Abilene, Texas where he first discovered his love for the game of golf at the age of four. Impressively, by the time he was twelve years old Estes had already decided that he wanted to play golf for a living, although he also played basketball while he was in high school. He went on to prove his gift for the game while playing during his college career, at the University of Texas. In 1988 Estes was rewarded for his skills, when he won the Haskins Award for the nation’s most outstanding collegiate golfer.
Having turned professional in 1988, by the end of 2002, Estes had achieved four PGA Tour victories. His career began being affected by injury in 2011 when he managed to make twelve starts on the PGA Tour, despite being in recovery from a wrist injury. Despite his limited number of starts Estes still managed to finish in one hundred and thirty fifth place. He regained his Tour card through qualifying school and also satisfied a medical extension. Since then his career has been limited, he only made two starts in 2013, and he has suffered from a shoulder injury which has meant he is playing the 2014/2015 season on a medical extension.
Over the years Estes has been especially well-known for the high quality of his short game, and for following a strict fitness regime which includes Weight lifting and sprinting.
Away from the golf course Estes is a season-ticket holder for University of Texas football. He also enjoys travelling, and has said that he especially enjoys visiting Sydney in Australia.
As of the end of 2014, Estes had achieved four wins on the PGA Tour, amassing prize money of $21,536,177.
