A native of Grant, Florida, Billy Horschel was a four-time All-American on the University of Florida Gators golf team. He was also a two-time Southeastern Conference (SEC) player of the year.
Horschel turned professional in 2009. Inconsistent play and injuries forced him to make four different trips to the PGA qualifying school before breaking out in 2013. Horschel’s 2013 season saw him record three straight top-ten performances and then his first career victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Horschel’s final round at Zurich included a string of six consecutive birdies, allowing him to defeat D.A. points by a single shot. This stretch of play catapulted Horschel into the top ten of the FedEx Cup standings and the PGA Tour money list. It also placed him in the Top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
By April of that year, Horschel had made the cut in twenty-three consecutive starts. The performances allowed him to qualify for his first Major as a professional (He played in the 2006 U.S. Open as an amateur), the U.S. Open at famous Merion Golf Club. Horschel played solidly that week, hitting all 18 greens in Friday’s second round. He faded a bit on the weekend but finished in a tie for 4th place.
Horschel built on his 2013 performance with a monster 2014 season. Peaking at the right time of the year, He won the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship on consecutive weekends, capturing the 2014 FedEx Cup and the $10 million top prize.
Horschel’s next challenge is to contend in more majors. His top-five performance at the 2013 U.S. Open is his only top-ten performance in seven career major tournaments.
