Azahara Munoz is one of the most decorated amateur and collegiate players of all-time. She flashed her talent at an early age, winning the 2002 Spanish Amateur as a 14-year old. At 16, the young Spaniard captured the Girls British Open Championship. In 2008, she finished runner-up in the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Munoz played her collegiate golf at Arizona State University, winning both an individual title (2008) and a team title (2009).
She turned professional in 2009. Munoz’s professional career got off to a fast start. After gaining a sponsor’s exemption to play in the 2009 Madrid Ladies Masters, Munoz fired a final round 64 which got her into a three-way playoff for the title. She then proceeded to eagle the first hole of sudden death and took home 50,000 Euros and, more importantly, a three-year exemption for the Ladies European Tour.
Munoz also enjoyed early success across the pond in the United States. She placed fifth in the final qualifying school in December 0f 2009 and earned her 2010 LPGA card. She took advantage of this opportunity by making the cut in her first eleven tournaments in 2010 with two Top 10 finishes and over $400,000 in earnings. She qualified for three of the four Majors and finished in the Top 20 at each tournament. These efforts were more than enough to secure the 2010 LPGA Rookie of the Year award.
Munoz has continued to play well the past few years. She won her firstLPGA event in 2012 at the Sybase Match Play Championship. She defeated Candie Kung 2 and 1 in the final and took home a purse of $375,000.
In 2014 she made the cut at all of the Major championships, including a tie for 4th place at the LPGA Championship. In all, Munoz has won three times on the European Ladies Tour and once on the LPGA tour. In 2014 she cracked into the Top 20 in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
