Footwork and the correct footwork are essential in creating a great golf swing that is consistent, powerful and accurate. The correct footwork enables your weight to transfer and shift correctly during your swing action and without this, you would be unable to hit long, accurate shots repetitively.
Initially, when you set up to play your golf shot from your address position, you want to have your feet shoulder width apart and to have your weight distributed on the balls of your feet and quite evenly between your feet. If you are playing a driver or fairway wood, your weight will be set slightly on your back foot and if you are playing an iron, your weight will be set slightly more forward on your front foot. Both of your feet need to be flat to the ground and you need to be balanced.
As you swing the golf club back away from the golf ball, your weight will shift and transfer on to your back foot, or right foot if you are a right handed player. As this happens, ensure that you keep your right foot flat to the ground and keep your weight in the centre of your foot to ensure you maintain your balance. Your left foot may roll over on to its inside as your weight shifts and this is absolutely fine, but if possible keep your heel on the ground if you can make a 90 degree shoulder turn with this. This will be your foot position at the top of your back swing.
To instigate your down swing, you need to transfer your weight forward and left on to your front, or left foot as your lower body rotates towards the target. Push up off your right foot, allowing your right heel to lift from the ground and rotate your right shoelaces towards the target as you do this. You should strike through the golf ball as this is happening and your weight is transferring on to your left foot.
You should finish with very little weight on your right foot. Your right shoe sole should be completely off the ground with only your right toes in contact with the ground and your right shoe laces should be towards the target. Your left foot should be flat to the ground throughout your down swing and follow through and the majority of your weight should have moved on to this foot as you finish your golf swing.

If you keep your right foot on the ground as you swing through impact, your weight will be held back from transferring forward on to your left foot and you will struggle to achieve a solid, clean connect with the club head and the golf ball. Keeping your right foot on the ground through impact would tend to result in you hitting the ground before the golf ball.

If you lift your right heel on your back swing then you will be unable to transfer your weight correctly on your back swing. Lifting your right heel as you swing back would tend to result in you keeping your weight on your left foot which would result in a reverse pivot.
