You're Correct!
A punch golf shot is a shot that is hit with a deliberately low trajectory. It is a really effective shot to be able to play if you are faced with windy conditions as it allows you to keep the ball low and under any strong winds. It is also a valuable shot to have if you are faced with a situation where you are in trees or have over hanging branches. Being able to keep the golf shot low will allow you to escape the situation and still make a low score.
n order to play an effective punch shot, you need to make a few alterations to your usual set up, in order to promote a deliberately low trajectory. Initially, you want to play the golf ball further back in your stance. Doing this will mean that the club head strikes the golf ball as it is swinging downwards and the face is de-lofted, producing a lower trajectory than usual.
You also need to place slightly more weight on your front foot, or left foot if you are a right handed golfer and position your hands further forward. This will encourage less loft on the club face as the club head strikes the golf ball. To ensure that your hands are forward, simply create a straight line from your left shoulder, down your left arm and then extend this on down the shaft of the golf club. To actually play the shot, you want to work on keeping this straight line from your left shoulder, down your arm and the shaft of the golf club, as you swing the club away from the golf ball and then as you swing through. If you use your wrists during the swing, you will create a higher position in the club head as it swings around you and as such, the club head will strike down more towards the ball, causing a higher flighted golf shot. Keep your wrists very passive and maintain the straight line from your left arm and the shaft as you swing back and through.
Your back swing will be shorter than usual as you are not using your wrists, so you want to swing to around shoulder high on your back swing. On your follow through, the club position will be much lower than your usual finish position as you are not using your wrists. The club head will finish lower than your hands, rather than higher, in a laid off position.
One final point is to play the shot with your left foot further back than usual. Position your left toes level with your right shoe laces and this will rotate your lower body towards the target. As you play the shot, you will now find it easier to turn towards the target and keep the club head swinging towards the target, allowing you to be as accurate as possible.

If you position the golf ball further forward in your stance than usual, the club head will strike the ball with slightly more loft on it than usual, as the club head moves beyond its lowest point as it strikes the ball. This will produce a higher trajectory golf shot. To hit a low punch shot, play the golf ball further back in your stance.

Swinging the golf club harder as you strike the ball will actually increase the amount of spin on the golf ball. The balls spin is what makes it rise into the air so with more spin, the ball will actually fly higher and not allow you to hit a low punch shot.

Placing your weight slightly more on your back foot, when playing a golf shot, will result in you hitting the ball on a higher trajectory than usual. More weight on your back foot moves the lowest point of your swing arc to before the ball. As a result of this, you will catch the ball on the up swing of the golf club, increasing the loft on the club face and creating a higher initial launch angle for the ball. For punch shots, place more weight on your front foot.
