You're Correct!

Why Do People Keep Telling Me I Am Lifting My Head When I Play My Golf Shots?Because you are topping or hitting the top of the golf ball, people presume that you are lifting your head up but in actual fact the main reason that you hit the top of the golf ball is that your grip pressure is too high.

If it feels that your head is staying in position, but everyone keeps telling you that you are lifting your head up, you will probably start to notice that they tell you that after you have hit a very low shot, where you have only connected with the top of the ball. When this happens, one of the first things people will presume you are doing is that you are lifting your head up as you swing, either on your back swing or during your down swing and through impact. The reason for this is because if you lift your head up, it lifts your posture up and as a consequence you will lift the club up away from the ground and end up hitting the top of the golf ball. However, if you feel that your head is staying still and staying in position when you are playing your golf shot and you are still topping the golf ball, then just check your grip pressure as this is the main reason you will have an air shot, or that you will hit the top of the golf ball - you are squeezing the golf club too tightly.

Take hold of your golf club and place it next to the ball, so you are ready to play your golf shot. Now notice what pressure you think your hands are holding the golf club at. Give the pressure that you are feeling in your hands a number. 10 is the maximum you can squeeze the golf club at, so notice what number you feel you are at. If you are holding at a 4 or a 5, that is absolutely ideal. 4 out of 10 is the correct pressure to hold the club at, rather than a squeeze. As you start to increase your grip pressure and you start to squeeze the golf club, so that your grip pressure gets higher and closer to 10, the muscles in your arms are now working and as the muscles in your arms work, they actually contract and get shorter. Effectively you are shortening the distance between yourself and the club head, as you are shortening the length of your arms and the club head is lifting off the ground, because it is being pulled towards you as your arm length is shortening. This now means that you are going to hit the top of the golf ball, so work on having a softer grip pressure before you hit your shots. Check that your grip pressure is 4 out of 10. If you are not sure where that is, just squeeze as tightly as you can, all the way up to 10 and then halve it to 5. Now nudge this down one to 4 and that is the right pressure to hold and swing with, all the way through your golf swing.

Very rarely do golfers actually lift their head before impact. If this is ever the case, focus more on maintaining your spine angle and extending your arms through impact.

People will tell you that you are lifting your head during your golf swing and if you are lifting your head up then you will actually be altering your posture. This means that you will be straightening your spine up as you swing either back away from the golf ball, or down into the shot. As you are lifting your spine up and straightening your spine into a more vertical position coming out of your golf posture, you will find that you are raising the club up away from the ground. You are increasing the distance between your shoulders and the ground as you become more vertical with your posture.

Work on maintaining your posture position, but also double check your grip pressure, because the main reason for hitting the very top of the ball is your grip pressure is too tight. If you work on this, then the next time you are out on the course, you should find that you get a big improvement in your ball striking and that your scores get lower.
