You're Correct!
If you have found you have got into deep rough when you are out on the golf course, the first thing to do is make sure your priority is to get out of the deep rough and back on to the shorter grass of the fairway.
It does not matter how far out you are from the pin, do not look at the yardage that is left and be too greedy and end up taking a club where you do not escape from the deep rough, because you were prioritizing distance. The priority is to get the ball out of this rough and to do that you need to play a high golf shot.
Pick a very lofted golf club, something like your pitching wedge or even your sand iron. As you become more experienced you might feel that you could maybe hit a 9, or your 8 iron out, but initially play your sand iron or your pitching wedge, as the most lofted club.
To get some height on this shot, set up with the ball in the middle of your feet. You need to ensure that your hands are set up over the top of the golf ball, so make sure the shaft of the club is pointing up at your belly button and make sure, if you are a right handed golfer, that you have got your weight on your left side. If you have got your weight on your left side this is really going to help you to strike down on the ball and you will then hit a very high shot with this downward striking trajectory.
One of the biggest problems for your back swing is going to be a lot of long grass around the club head, so you want to get the club head up and out of that grass as quickly as possible. Therefore, as you swing the club back, make sure your weight is on your left side and then as you swing your club back, hinge your wrists very quickly, so that you get the club head up and out of this longer grass. Doing this will allow you a very steep trajectory with the club head back down towards the golf ball, a very steep angle of attack and you will drive the club head down into the grass about one inch before the ball and the club head will catch the ball to pop it up high and escape from the deeper rough.
Make sure that when you are playing this shot, that you hold slightly tighter than usual. As you play the shot the grass is going to grab hold of the club head and if it wraps around the hosel of the club, it is really going to twist the club face and try to twist the club in your hands. If the grass twists the club face over to the left by wrapping around the hosel, it will de-loft the club and you will find that you do not hit a high shot. Hold slightly firmer than usual so that you do not get any twisting of the club head, as it goes back to the grass.
Sorry Try Again! - See Explanation Below
This will generally produce a shallow angle of attack and therefore the club head will encounter more resistance from the turf before impact.

It is very, very, important that your priority here, with this shot, is to get the ball out and is to play a high shot, over everything else. Ignore the yardage you have got left to the green. If you have ended up in the deep rough sometimes you have to take your medicine, play a chip and a high shot back out on to the fairway, then you can go for the green. If you get too greedy and you start playing for the yardage you have left and you do not escape the rough you are wasting shots and you are going to end up with a higher score on that hole than is necessary.
Make sure you follow those guidelines to play a high shot from the rough and you should find that you keep your golf score to a minimum.
