You're Correct!
When you play, it is very important that your hands hold the golf club rather than squeeze it.
As you hold the golf club the muscles in your arms and shoulders are relaxed and at full extension. If you squeeze your hands on to the golf club before, or during your swing, you actually shorten the length of the muscles in your arms and as you shorten the muscles in your arms, you effectively shorten the distance between yourself and where the club head is, meaning that the club head gets picked up off the floor and pulled towards you. Holding the club too tight is the main reason for having an air shot or hitting the top of the golf ball, because shortening that distance between yourself and the club head means you have shortened the length of your arms by gripping too tight. It is really important if you want to make a consistent strike and therefore a consistent height to your shots, that you are very relaxed when holding the club.
If you put your hands on the club and you squeeze as tightly as you possibly can and we give that a number 10, the correct number to be on is 4. Hold the club as tightly as you can, now just half the pressure in your hands to a 5 and then hold just slightly less to a 4. As long as you are around that 4 or 5 mark, you are at a suitably relaxed level and you will be hitting some really nice golf shots. But if you start to squeeze tighter, then you will not hit as well because of your arms shortening. Work on having a nice, relaxed golf grip.
If you find it difficult to create a relaxed grip on the club, set up over the golf ball and then just before you swing, squeeze as tightly as you can, up to a 10 on our pressure scale and then just half the pressure in your hands and swing straight away. By doing this you then know that you are only on that 5 out of 10 pressure and you are in a much more relaxed state.
Holding with a more relaxed grip pressure will get you hitting much better golf shots. If you are holding too tightly you will tend to hit the top of the ball. If you are holding too loosely you will not have enough pressure in your hands when the club head connects with the ball and it will turn the club head or twist it in your hands with an off-centre hit and also you will not be able to drive the club head through the ball as well.
Work on having the correct pressure in your hands when you hold and swing the golf club and that will really help improve your golf game.

If you hold the golf club really tightly, squeezing it really hard in your hands, then you definitely are not going to let go of it whilst playing your golf shots. However, in squeezing your hands so tightly, you are activating the muscles in your arms and when these work, they contract, or shorten. As such, you now pull the club head up away from the ground and on the resulting shot, you will hit the top of the golf ball, losing height and distance from the shot.
