When Should I Try To Accelerate My Golf Swing The Most? (Video) - by Dean Butler

So the question is, when should I accelerate my golf swing the most? At which point, is it when I take the club away, is it when I start a down swing, or as I hit that ball? Well I'm sure, most of you will be kind of thinking, well, hopefully, when I hit the ball. But what tends to happen is this, most people tend to hit the ball from the top of the back swing. They tend to get themselves set up, swinging the club back, and then from the top, they’re hitting, they’re trying to hit because they are trying to accelerate from the top of the back swing. And what happens when you accelerate for the top of the back swing, is what we call casting. Because when you get to the top and then you try to hit it. And as you try to hit it you can see this right shoulder throws the club outside, a bit like casting the old fishing line out. So most people would tend to get the club to the top, hit from the top, and it could get thrown out, and guess what? The club that goes out comes in.

So you’ll find if you’re one of those people who tend to hit the ball from the top, that that ball would tend to start its journey, down the left side, and find that ball just curving to the right. Think about it – ask yourself, how many people – how many people watch this now, as you hit the ball from left to right, I bet the majority of hands go up, yes it’s one of the most common faults the game of golf. And we’re not saying it’s just down to this factor, but is a contributing one. So when should that club accelerate the most. But certainly not in the back swing, because in the back swing, you’ll look what would happen, we would be pulling ourselves out of position. So that’s no good. And remember, nobody ever hit a ball in the back swing, so why would you go first in the back swing? The back swing is there to get the club in the right position, to give you control. So if I demonstrate where we should go from here to the club back, nice and smooth till here, we get to the top, we’ve now stored all the power and all the energy into this position. As we start the back swing down, we don’t rush, we start to move with the left knee, and then hip is coming down into the hitting area. And when we get into this position here, the club coming nice and smooth not rushing it. When we get to here then the club head accelerates through. So to try and get that feel of from this point to this point or getting that acceleration, you could actually put a tire down, and concentrate in getting to here, and doing this from that point, or just trying to hit that tire, it builds up the strength of your arms, builds up a good resistance, and then we take that tire away, or when you saw that you can actually get the impact bags, you get yourself out of the ball. You’ll be surprised how effortless it actually is. So, let me demonstrate a golf shot. I’ll exaggerate it slightly, so from here, I’m going to accelerate just into the hitting area. So from here, then you got some control, and right at the bottom, I accelerate it. I’ve got a good driving 3-wood up to the top there okay? So not this point, not this point is when you get to here, that’s when we put the foot on the gas pedal right up the last moment of the swing and that’s when you should accelerate in the swing.
