Friars Head Golf Club Courses Review
The golf course at Friars Head Golf Club was built and designed by a famous duo of architects, Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. The Friars Head sits on 350 acres of windswept real estate, half of it being a grassy/undulating meadow and the other half consisting of tree fringed dune land, overlooking Long Island Sound. The name of the club derives from what the sailors saw from the water when they were arriving to New York with their ships, i.e. a baldy dune-top/sand formation with some traces of vegetation, reminding them of a tonsured friars head. The Friars Head Golf Club was founded in 2003 and it features 6744 yards of golf from its longest tees for a 71 par and its design can be described as a symphony of golf holes, challenging golfers of all skill levels, a golf course full of character, located on New Yorks Long Island, arguably the home of golf in the United States and the world. Friars Head is easily reachable, being a 30 minute drive from Shinnecock.
The golf course wears indubitably Ben Crenshaw/Bill Cores signatures when it comes to design, especially when you look at its undulating greens and the natural blown out bunkers; I mean, youll definitely note the lack of hole handicap rankings, there are also no yardages and no hole names. The lack of hole-handicapping is due to the fact that winds are constantly shifting direction in the area and the difficulty of each hole depends upon from where the wind blows when you play. The Friars Head Golf Club will present you with the purest golf experience, as there are no cart paths, no frills and no rakes anywhere, also no slope ratings available on your card. The course sits on a very sandy terrain, with the sand looking like white sugar, this being the defining characteristic of the place, together with the sloping ridge of land youll encounter when you approach the water. The Friars Head Golf Club offers a unique golfing experience/feel, similar to Cypress Point according to many, with the sand being omnipresent, i.e. not just in the bunkers.
