Taconic Golf Club Course Review
The Taconic Golf Club sits on a beautiful piece of real estate in Williamstown, Massachusetts, 150 miles west of Boston and the golf course wears the signature of architect Greg Canales. The Taconic boasts its 18 hole championship grade golf course which is arguably one of the top 10 collegiate golf courses in the United States. The initial/rudimentary 9 hole course dates way back to 1896, but it was later extended to 18 holes in 1928 for a 73 par, whilst the current layout was brought to life after an extensive renovation job that took place in 1958. Today the Taconic plays to a 71 par and its main "selling point" sort to speak is its setting in one of the most scenic locations in the great state of Massachusetts. The course suffered another restoration job 10 years ago, in 2006, which upgraded the drainage, widened the fairways, relocated the cart paths, removed a number of trees all throughout the property and installed new fairway bunkers, all these changes being aimed at returning the Taconic course to its initial state, the way it was intended by its creators.
Gil Hanse was retained to do the respective job and he really managed to restore the Taconic's original feel, which reminds players of the classic Golden Age in terms of golf design, with the course's back to front sloped greens on almost every hole. Playing the Taconic makes for an epic journey, an intimate experience through its tree lined fairways, despite the fact that the layout spreads over just 109 acres of rolling terrain. Due to its masterful routing, you'll be able to admire the stunning views offered by the Berkshire mountains during your game, and the pacing is even more impressive than the routing. There aren't many golf courses to match the Taconic in terms of pacing, routing, character and overall ambiance, as I hold this baby to be very close to the ideal in terms of epic course-design.
