Myopia Hunt Club Golf Course Review

The Myopia Hunt golf club is one of the oldest if not the oldest in the United States, being founded way back in 1894 and it was designed by architect Herbert C. Leeds, featuring 6539 yards of golf from its longest tees for a 72 par. The golf course sits on a beautiful piece of property less than twenty miles north of Boston and if youre playing here for the first time, youll be amazed by the vintage feel and look of the facilities and also by the fascinating old-school design of the course, which looks like an exhibit in a museum, being the definition of early American golf course architecture. Given the old-school feel of the place, you wouldnt be so amazed spotting Herbert C. Leeds sitting peacefully on the front porch in his squeaky rocking chair, cigar and whiskey in hand, talking about his favorite golf game with his friends. This is how the place must have looked back in the day, when the Myopia Hunt golf club was the host for the first fourteen U.S. Opens. The golf course itself is also amazing, featuring a hugely enjoyable layout, boasting its singular holes that you wont be able to find anywhere else in the United States, and I am not kidding either.

Be advised that the Myopia Hunt Club is a private facility, available just for its members and their guests and its located in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, but I bet you already knew it. Back in the day, golf was played somewhat rudimentary, on nine hole courses, but the layout at Myopia Hunt was extended over a period of 5 years and the modern 18 hole layout was opened for players finally in 1901. Herbert C. Leeds managed to build a quirky golf course which is very unusual, to say the least, with a unique layout, full of character and very distinct holes, i.e. no 2 holes are the same. Another unique flavor with regard to the Myopia Hunt Clubs golf course is the random use of bunkers, which have varying shapes and sizes and they appear in the most peculiar places. Theres no other golf course in the United States to feature such a weird mixture and sometimes cruelly penal bunkering as this baby. The Myopia Hunt Club is a must-see/must-play course in the US, especially if youre interested in golf course history and architecture, being one of the most historical ones in the country.
