Water Hazards, What Should I Focus On When Playing A Golf Shot Over Water? (Video) - by Natalie Adams

What should I focus on when playing a golf shot over water hazards? Well the biggest thing here is you’re going to be very attracted focally to the water. But the problem we’ve got here is your brain doesn’t hear the word don’t, so if you’re standing looking at the ball, going for the target but you’re focusing on the water and sort of saying to yourself; don’t hit the ball into the water, your focus is actually on the water. Your brain focuses on, what you’ve just instructed it to do so, it doesn’t hear the word don’t, it just hears the information of water and your brain’s very clever and it gets your body to react to whatever image you have in your head. So what we need to work on is making sure that when you’re looking to play the shot over water hazards, your focus is on the landing zone, rather than what you need to go over.

So stand behind the golf ball, yes notice the hazard, but you need to focus more on the shot to actually play. So notice the hazard, but work on looking at where you want the ball to land. Focus more positively rather than negatively. Rather than having; don’t go in the water, focus on land on the green. So if you were painting a picture, of what you can see for your target yes paint all the detail in, paint the water in, paint the green or the fairway on the far side, but paint the shot in and really focus on the shot line, on where the shot line’s finishing. So that the focus becomes on what you actually want to do, yes the hazards are there in the background, but you’re not focusing on them. So when you come to hit over the water, focus on, I want to hit this, into the air, into the air, into that position there, rather than getting the focus on, don’t hit the water, as soon as you focus on that, the water will become a magnet and the ball will just fly straight in. So change your focus to be more positive over Water Hazards, make sure you’re focusing on where you want the ball to land, rather than where you don’t.
