Dead Leg Fairway Wood Bunker Shot by Tom Stickney
Dead Leg Fairway Wood Bunker Shot by Tom Stickney Tom Stickney - A Top 100 Golf Teacher Tom Stickney – A Top 100 Golf Teacher

Hi I'm Tom Stickney Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and today comes a question from Rich Davis out of a Colonial Country Club in Memphis Tennessee. Rich wants to know how my supposed to hit this fairway wood out of a bunker? You know what 1st of all I would tell anybody unless you absolutely have to have a fairway wood out of a bunker I wouldn't do it but if you have to the 1st thing you have to look at is a lower lip as you can see here I have a very long low bunker there's not a lot of lip to carry so I'm going to be OK. The 2nd thing I'm going to do is I'm going to make sure that I use all an arm swing and what I'm trying to do with this arm swing is trying to keep my legs as dead as possible.

Every time I start trying to hit a 3 wood or 5 wood out of a bunker or even a long hybrid I'm going to jiggle around so we want to make sure we're more stable. Now when you're more stable going to use your arms the ball is going to tend to move from the left to the right that's what we want we want to move a little left right that's going to give a little lift it's going to make a living easier. So I'm going to set up just like I normally would I might choke down just a little bit but all I'm going to do is I'm going to be aim little bit to the left and I'm going to keep my legs as dead as possible and I'll try to hit this golf ball right the center if I hit it right the center I'm guaranteed not to do that. So here we go aim a little bit to the left choke down little bit dead legs get it right this right in center, and if I do that I may have a little bit better shot. Now it's a really hard shot it's hard not to hole up you say get it just a little bit thin so I wouldn't use that 3 wood in the bunker too often but if you have to that's the way you are going to do it.
