Shank Golf, What Are The Shanks And How Can I Get Rid Of Them (Video) - by Peter Finch

What are the shanks in golf and how can I get rid of them? Now a shank is hit when using an iron club when the ball makes contact with the hosel or the shank of the club. This impasse kind of catastrophic amount of spin on the ball and it will shoot out at the right hand side if you are a right handed in a totally uncontrollable fashion. Its one of the worst shots to hit both kind of technically because it shoots out to the right its unrecoverable but also mentally because once you hit a shank it will stay in the mind and it will probably stay with you for the rest of the round if not the rest of the week. So its one of those things that’s very important not fall into the habit of doing. Now a shank can occur from a number of different positions, most commonly when the club moves on a very into out path and the hosel is presented to the ball first. When that happens it contacts the hosel and the ball and it will spin out of right hand side. The opposite is true if you come from out to in position and again present the hosel first.

So you can hit a shank golf shot from both the inside and from the outside now both are quite extreme positions. So actually stop the shanks first of all you need to indentify which type you have so have an out to in shank golf shot or into out shank. Once you have indentified that there are a couple of drills you can use the first one you can use especially if you are struggling with an out to in shank so traveling from this direction is to hit balls by using a two ball drill. Put one ball just on the outside of the other make sure you’ve just got enough room to actually move the club to the inside ball without hitting the outside. Practice swinging through picking this inside ball cleanly and not touching the outside ball. If you can do this then the club won’t be travelling on an outside path and you won’t be representing the hosel of the club to the ball. Now you can us exactly the same drill but just in reserve if you are travelling very much from into out. Pop a ball on the inside just enough room to actually get this club down and practice missing the inside ball and the hitting the outside ball. And this will help if you are coming from this inside position. So the shank can come from either in to out swing path or an out to in swing path. First indentify what the issue is and then use the two ball drill appropriately and hopefully we should see an end to that horrible shot.
