On Plane Golf Swing, What Does It Mean (Video) - by Peter Finch

What does an on plane golf swing mean? Now during the golf swing there are lots of different things which move on their own individual planes whether it will be the club head, the club shaft, the arms and the hands; but what was most commonly known as an on plane golf swing is how the club head and the shaft move throughout the back swing and the through swing. Now what you want to be looking for if you can achieve an on plane golf swing is first of all the spine angle to be tilted down from the hips and to actually get an angle created between the shaft and the spine which is about 90 degrees. As the club is taken away, you want to be tracing back along that same shaft angle until the club is horizontal with the ground and the hands aligned up with the club head when viewed from this down the line view.

As the club moves up within the wrist hinge you want the butt end of the club to be pointing down towards the target line. Now if you can get into this position here, the angle of the shaft will match the same angle as it was at addressed. So we move up, club heading front of the hands, shaft angled and then the butt end of the club pointing down towards the target line; now from there, we rotate the shoulders and then try and return the club to the same position. With the butt end of the club pointing down at the target line, the club head in front of the hands here, note how the hips are turning through as you want to see in the down swing, and then we move through to impact and then we repeat the same positions going through to complete an on plane swing. Now, if you can get all those positions, that’s what's known as a one plane golf swing. So you can practice these movements in isolation. Probably the best way to do it is with a slow motion drill; so the club head, shaft, turn, shaft, club head, turn, and then repeat those positions on the other side on the through swing. If you can get all those things together, you will have a warm plane golf swing and hopefully, hopefully, some more consistent shots. So give that I want to go, use the slow motion swings, and try and try and enable yourself to get that on plane golf swing.
