What Does Moving Off The Ball Mean? (Video) - by Pete Styles

What does moving off the golf ball actually mean? What if we take your dress position to the golf ball here. We imagine there is a vertical line up coming up from the golf ball probably just up to my left eye socket. Moving off the golf ball is this movement away from the ball here, now this isn’t strictly a backswing, this is more of a back slide sliding away from the ball moving too far off the golf ball. The problem with that it is then very difficult to move back on to actually ahead of the ball, because if that’s my set up position then really that should be my impact position. Now if I’m trying to get to here but I’m starting my downswing from over here I’m going to struggle. So moving off the golf ball is not a good thing in the backswing, we don’t really want to get that far away from the ball.

You better off thinking of your backswing as a rotational motion rather than an lateral motion. So a decent backswing here, is to load up the shoulders and I’ve turned I haven’t swade so much. Now really nice way of practicing this, is imagine where that camera is there imagine that’s a mirror or a Patio door that I can see a reflection in, and I’m going to look up and I’m going to see myself in that mirror. Then I’m going to make my backswing and I want to see my head stay fairly well focused in what I can see behind me in that reflection I wouldn’t want to see a lateral slide off that’s too far back from the ball than to struggle to get good contact. And don’t mistake this with the ability of getting behind the ball to generate power I would consider the nice turn like that, with generated power I am slightly behind I can move back ahead and that’s nice. I’m not moving off the ball here and struggling to get back. So if I hit this ball I’m going to rotate behind it but I’m not going to move off the ball. I can generate plenty of power moving forwards but I didn’t slide off the ball in the backswing because that won’t help me get a good strike and that’s a really good definition of moving off the ball.
