If ever a non-golfer comes to see me for their first ever golf lesson, in their mind and certainly my mind we have probably got a simple aim from that first lesson enough to get the golf ball in the sky. If we get the golf ball in the air, there is a perception that we can go and play the game of golf. And it's certainly successful, it feels successful to get that ball up and therefore, the shots that roll across the floor a probably those that feel most frustrating to a brand new golfer. There's nothing worse than setting up to the ball, everything is looking good, they're feeling good about hitting the ball, a little half swing and then they top the ball and it rolls only to there. That takes a lot of practice by the way, that doesn't come easy. So if you're struggling with topping the golf ball and you're just scuttling the ball across the floor here, you've got some serious problems about the way you're going to play the game.
You might have been playing for a few years but you're still suffering with the top shots and the problem is on the golf course is most of the hazards are on the ground barring trees are up in the air. Pretty much everything else, we've got bunkers, we've got long grass, we've got water, we've got slopes all at low level. So as soon as we can consistently and accurately get that ball up in the air, then we've got a decent chance of being able to actually play this game to a good standard. So in this next little series of videos, let's look at the causes and the cures of the top shots and how we can put an end to hitting shots like this one.
