Should I use a shallow swing to get out of bunkers? Now your position in the bunker and the lie of your ball in the bunker should determine what angle of attack you actually want to use into the shot. Now if the lie is fantastic, it’s sitting up nicely, it’s not got any kind of mounds of sand around it, a nice shallow angle of attack will certainly do the job because you want to be entering just in before the ball and sweeping it out at a very fine carpet of sand and that does help -- that is helped by a nice shallow sweeping motion through and underneath the ball. It will also help lift the ball out very, very high.

However, if the ball isn’t lying that well, a shallow angle of attack might not get into the sand quite enough and you could start thinning the shot out of the bunker. In that case, a steeper angle of attack would be better. So for a shallow angle of attack when the lie is quite nice, you want to be opening up the club face and then you want to opening up the stance so the leading edge is pointing at the target. You want to be pointing the ball at the front of the stance and taking a nice wide swing and just scheming that ball into the sand underneath the ball, and really getting the revolutions on there to lift it high and to land it very, very softly. Nicely up and away and landing softly on the green. Now if the ball isn’t quite sitting well like I said using that shallow angle of attack just simply won’t work you just need to be a little bit steeper. In this situation don’t open the club quite as much, put the ball a little bit further back in the stance, put a little bit of weight on the front foot, hands pretty much level with the ball and just try a bit more of a steeper angle of attack in behind the ball. The ball will come out a little bit lower. It’ll come out with a little less back spin, however it will be a better technique to use out of those slightly poorer lies. A mistake that people make is to use the same technique throughout every lie. Adapt your technique to match the situation and you’ll soon find that you’re, you’re actually able to get up and down out of bunkers a lot, lot better. So a shallow angle of attack into a bunker shot in general to lift the ball high and land it soft is a good idea, but if the lie isn’t quite perfect, adopt a slightly steeper angle of attack which will send the ball out lower with a little less spin that will get the ball out of the sand a lot more consistently.
