Upright Golf Swing, What It Means And How Important Is It (Video) - by Peter Finch

What is meant an upright golf swing, and how important is it? An upright golf swing refers to the shaft position in the back swing. An upright golf swing will occur as you swing the club back, the club shaft points directly up at the sky or the putt end of the club points directly down in the ground and will normally kind of follow that the arms will lift very, very high and the club will be an upright or very vertical position. The opposite to this will be flat back swing where the club moves away and points out behind you, and the club gets into this position kind of parallel with the ground, and then from there the swing will normally follow in a very flat fashion.

The best way to swing is in between the two. So not an upright swing, not a flat swing but somewhere bang in the middle. However, upright swings can become useful when you start to play different types of shot. Now an upright golf swing and a full shot like a normal full shot will cause normally and slightly out to win swing path. And that could cause a fade if you wanted to maneuver the club from left to right in the air. So if you are looking to hit a little bit of a fade try and pick the club up a little bit steeper. It also becomes very, very important, when you are trying to hit a shot such as a flop shot. Now a very steep angle of attack is needed and therefore a very upright swing is needed. Is a similar kind of thing when you are playing a bunker shot you going to set up slightly open, with the club face open, picking the club up in a very steep and very upright manner and then driving down on the ball getting it to pop up into the air. So you can use this method, very upright swing, getting the club pointing pretty much straight up at the sky and then driving down and causing a very high and very floaty flop shot. So an upright swing is normally not really what’s required when you are hitting a full standard shot. However you can use it to hit a fade, strike down on the ball quite steeply and then hit these little flop shots as well.
