I like my favorite 7 iron, how important is club selection? When you’re out on the golf course, you’ve got up to 14 clubs that you can take around with you. So each of those clubs is there and designed to do a different job and a specific job. Now, if you’re only ever playing with one particular club or two particular clubs, you’re limiting yourself as to the shots that you’re able to hit. So, you are really going to become a golfer where there is only one option of doing things, you don’t have a variety of shots to be able to hit, and you’re not able to adapt to the situations that you find yourself in. So, I would say that if you’ve got a favorite club that you like to hit and you hit shots confidently with it and you know you could hit those shots, that’s great to get you going and to get you around the golf course, but then you do get to a point where you need more than that particular club and you need to learn how to use the other clubs. The other clubs are all there to do a job. So if you’re looking for a low long shot, 7 iron is not going to be the right club to take that, you need to be playing with a hybrid, or with a fairway wood. If you need a high shorter shot, again, 7 iron is not going to be the club to take, you need to use a pitching wedge that will fly high and land short.

So, make sure that you learn to use all your other clubs and don’t just keep using your favorite club on the golf course. A great tip to help you with that is when you’re at the driving range maybe warm up with your favorite club, but make sure you take all your other golf clubs with you in your bag. Then what I want you to do is go through the odd number clubs, so, hit one shot with you 9 iron, then hit another shot with your 7 iron, another shot with your 5 iron, then move into your 3 hybrids, and then moving into the fairway woods. Once you’ve done that, when you’ve hit a shot with that club, just leave it against the fence or the wall if you’re at the driving range. Now what we want to do is get all the even numbers out of the bag as well, so now start to move through the even numbers. If you don’t have a lot of time to practice, then what I’d suggest is do odd number clubs on one day, and even number clubs on the other day, but make sure you’re hitting all of your golf clubs when you’re practicing, so you get used to using them, and then that will stop you just taking your favorite 7 iron out and just hitting that all the time on the golf course. You’ll have many more strings to your bow, you’ll be able to hit a lot – more variety of shots. And when you’re out on the course, that’s what you need if you’re going to get your golf scores down.
