Why is distance control important in golf? Golf at its very basic level is a game of line and of length. There’s no point going out to a golf course and hitting the ball very straight if you can’t actually control the distance that you’re hitting the ball. If you’re faced with 100 yard shot which you can hit straight, but you have no idea and no concept of what club to hit and how far that club will travel, you’re putting yourself in a very difficult situation, and a situation from which you won’t be able to produce good scores. So having correct distance control in golf is absolutely vital. Also, if you know how far you hit a club, if you’re faced with 150 yards shot for example, which you know is an A-time, even if you’re slightly off line, you’ll still be finishing up around the green even if you’re not on the green; just simply because you’re distance control is much, much better.

What you don’t want to be doing is going out onto a course and having no idea of how far you hit each club. Before you actually go playing you need to have a basic understanding and a basic concept of how far each club in your bunk goes. If you’re faced with say a drive, and there’s water has it 150 yards off the Tee, you need to know what shot to hit to actually clear that water and to get the ball to safety. So before you play, have a bit of a practice session, work through your distances with your clubs and you’ll be in such a better situation when you get out to the course, you’re faced with a certain distance of shot and you know exactly what clubs to reach for and exactly how far that club will go. So practice your distances, gain a bit of control over them and you’ll be in a fantastic situation when you actually get out onto the course.
