Now there is an awful lot that can be made about the type of clubs that people are using and obviously a most manufacturers spend a fortune on marketing and advertising and paying professional players to play their brand of golf clubs, but ultimately what is in professional’s golf bag and what is in your golf bag could be exactly the same, you have the opportunity to go and buy exactly the golf clubs from the shelves that professional having that bag. It might not always suit your game because club should be fitted individually to the person in terms of their size their swing speed and the type of shots that they hit, but the one lesson that you can learn from the professional’s bag is how they space that set out really evenly, they don’t just buy what they have seen advertised, and they don’t just stick to one brand one manufacture, one style of club. What they will do is they will cherry pick the best clubs that suit them and the best clubs that fit into the right spaces.

So most people would have the driver at the top end of the bag and most professionals would have the lob wedge at the other end of the bag and then he is trying to fill that space with as many golf clubs as possible that do a slightly different job and have an even yardage space. So most place have a driver then a three wood, then a five wood or a hybrid club and then irons three through to sand wedge, possibly with a gap wedge, lob wedge and the putter at the top end. Don’t forget you are not allowed to carry more than 14 clubs. The one thing I think I see far too many amateur golfers doing is they heavily load the top end of their bags with head covers, so basically drive a three wood, five wood, seven wood two hybrid clubs, they have got six head covers in their bag, yet they have only got one wedge down the other end because they have not got space for it. And actually out in the golf course think about where you play most of your shots, think about where you need more control over your distances it’s actually at the short end. If I am 200 yards away from the flag I don’t really mind whether I hit the ball 190, 200 or 210. I am just happy that I am down there 200 yards away and on the green the front the middle, the back of the green, it’s almost irrelevant, but from 40, 50, 60 yards away I want to be really accurate that’s where I need to know whether I have got exactly the right yardage to the front, the middle or the back and I want to hit that pitch shot a lot closer than let's say a 200 yard, three iron or five wood.

So if you are struggling with your short game consider whether you can shift the balance of your set take out a few long irons, bring in a few short irons like the professionals would do and also consider the fact that you are only allowed to carry 14 clubs on one given day different golf courses might suit different clubs, so the professionals will add in and take away different clubs depending on the condition they are going to play in, if it's a windy day, they might put in a two iron or something like that a lower lofted hybrid in their bag, if it’s not a windy day it's a still day maybe they put in a five wood or a seven wood or an extra wedge at the other end.

So vary that bag around a little bit don’t you stick with exactly the same clubs all the time. Vary the longer irons or the shorter irons and again make sure that if you are playing a lot of shots from shot range you have got more wedges and just drop a few of those head covers, learn from the pros in terms of how they balance their bags and that should help you improve your skills.
