Michelle Wie must be one of the most recognizable faces in the game of golf and particularly on the LPGA tour in the ladies game. She has been out there playing golf for the high level since she was 10 years old, she actually one of the youngest qualifiers ever for the US amateur ladies golf championship, qualified when she was 10 years old. Now most 10 year olds you see this big they can’t hit the ball more than 150 yards and they are never going to be able to qualify for such a high prestigious event. But Michelle Wie was very tall, very young, very long legs, very long arms and that enabled her to produce massive distance and still to this day she is capable of hitting the ball 280 yards which for most men would actually compete quite nicely on the big golf courses.

Michelle Wie is a very, very long flowing powerful golf swing. But she probably actually hasn’t actually produced the golf that we would have expected, in her early days we thought she was going to be the next big superstar, she hasn’t quite taken that step to the next level possibly due to the over flexibility within her golf swing that produces some inconsistency. Now this sort of movement that she makes in her golf swing isn’t going to be suitable for every player if you are 5 foot 5 tall, 15 stone, big forearms and round, there’s no point trying to make the really big high long flexible golf swing.

This sort of swing works better for my body shape, long arms, long legs, not particularly powerful but very flexible so we need the width of our golf swings to generate power similar to Michelle Wie. So good setup Michelle Wie holds the height really nicely, creates superb width, really pushes the golf club head wide, massively high at the top of the swing, big fast leg action and superb extension down the target line. Really works this principle of trying to keep the left hand or the glove as far away from her body, the whole way through the swing to produce maximum distance.

The one thing Michelle Wie could be guilty of sometimes is that flexibility can actually count against her. She can sometimes get too long, too inconsistent, too unstable and produce some pretty bad mis-hits. So if you are a very long, rangy, flexible player, just make sure that your golf swing doesn’t get too out of control and cause the inconsistent bad shot to be too far off line, losing golf balls is never going to win major championships.
