If you’re struggling with an inconsistent strike on the golf ball particularly with your irons, now is a good time to look at why that might be. And the first thing to identify is; which part of the club are you hitting if you are striking it poorly. Are you hitting the sweet spots with your class as a good strike? Are you hitting too low, too high, too much towards the heel, or too much towards the toe? And those are your variations or any combination of; if you’re truly inconsistent, you’re probably hitting all over the club face. When you’re playing on the golf course, you could look for where the grass is marking on the face where the mud is marking on the face, and that would help us identity if you are an inconsistent ball striker.
Now, for the ball to be striking inconsistently, clearly, you’re doing something that’s inconsistent as well; you are not setting up to the golf ball or swinging the club in the same way each time. And I find for most golfers, it’s probably their set up that’s the biggest issue. So we’re going to make sure things like the ball position is the same, the width of stand is the same, the distance away from the golf ball the same. Then during the backswing, we want to try and maintain a very steady backswing turn not a big lift and movement; too much movement in the body is very difficult to consistently attack the ball in the same position and get a good consistent strike.
One of the area where we see a lot of golfers becoming consistent is how they balance through the ball and the finish. If at the end of the swing you’re holding the perfect balance shape as the ball flies up, lands nicely on the fairway, you would think that by starting in the same position each time, I finished in the same position each time, therefore I should be more consistent with my strike. But we see quite a few golfers make their swing and then fall off balance a little bit. Now if I’ve moved away this way stands the reason I moved the club as I did so, that ball hit right off the toe and I can feel that it still reverberates through my fingers as the ball weakly slices off to the right-hand side. So, if you’ve got a consistent set up, a very smooth consistent backswing without too many moving parts and a very good consistent balanced follow-through position. When you’re consistent, the ball striking with your irons will become more consistent as well.
