So we need to understand that if we are making a putting stroke, it is still a golf swing. It just doesn’t have all the extra moving parts of a normal stroke, but it has the two key components of a backstroke and a follow through. And it’s important that we really work hard on controlling that backstroke and controlling that follow through so that the right length, that they are also the correct speed for any given golf shot. So as we set up the golf ball in the correct position, we’ve got that nice light grip pressure, the even eye position and we are not going to be looking with our head as we make a stroke. Now as we take the club back away from the golf ball, we have to come back the right length and we have to come through the right length to judge the speed correctly for any given golf putt. And actually if we take a view of how that happens, if I use my hands too much and I have a hinge here and a release here. Now this hinging and releasing action during your stroke is going to create a lot of inconsistency in terms of how far and how hard you are hitting the golf ball towards the target.

So it will be much better suited if that back and through stroke which created with the shoulders and the hands and arms weren’t too involved. We need to make sure the grip pressure is light but the hands aren’t flicking. We also go to consider the length of the backswing, the length if the follow through directly affects how far that ball goes. So if we have a very long backstroke, and a very long follow through, that ball is going to go too far. If we have a very short backstroke and a very short follow through, chances are the ball is going to come out a bit shorter. But also like the back and the through stroke to match nicely. So we’ve got light grip pressure stabilize, we bring the club back the right distance, the follow through should push through the right distance with the correct amount of release and roll the ball the right distance down towards the hole. So understand that a golf swing is a mini version of the full swing, we just don’t have lots and lots of moving parts. But it still has the right length backstroke and the right length follow through and hopefully improving on those elements can improve your putting.
