Why are golf drivers not always the same length? When you are choosing a driver, when you are getting actually fit for a driver which is something I recommend, the actual shaft length is an important part of the process. If you have a very very long shaft length, your actual club head speed will increase. This is because with a longer shaft you can get more width in the swing; you can get the club travelling on a wider ark around the body, and with a wider ark comes more speed. So with a longer shaft you’ll be able to produce more club head speed. However with more club head speed comes the trade off, is going to be less accurate and you won’t be out to square that club face quite as easily at the point of impact.

Now the opposite end of the scale is if you have a shorter driver length in your -- shorter shaft length in your driver, you’ll have less available club head speed, but you’ll have more accuracy because your hands are effectively closer to the club head, which enables you to control the club face a little bit more. So what you have to do is really kind of decide what you want. Do you want a shaft length which is very long which will give you more distance, or do you want a shaft length which is shorter that will offer more consistency. What you need to be aware of is when kind of a manufacture is bringing a driver out and they say, oh this driver will offer 10 more yards. On their robot test, that driver might offer 10 more yards but with a longer shaft which will cause more inconsistency with the general kind of populous of golfers. So when you’re getting the new driver make sure you get custom fit, make sure shaft length is one of the things you explore and make sure you get the right length of shaft for your game.
