    After finishing his college career at Baylor University, Smith turned pro in 1987. It wasn’t until the 2000 season that Smith managed to obtain a PGA Tour card. He played on the Asian Tour pre dominantly for about seven years, where he won once, at the 1998 Guam Open. In his first season on the Nationwide Tour in 1999, Smith finished the season 31st in the standings which earned his a PGA Tour card for the following season.

    In his rookie season, Smith had four top 25s with his best result being a 9th place finish at the GTE Byron Nelson Classic. He finished his rookie year 118th on the money list and therefore retained his card for the following season. Smith had his best ever season on the PGA Tour in 2001 when he had four top 10s and registering his best ever PGA Tour finish at the National Car Rental Golf Classic Disney when he finished with a 63 to end the tournament in a tie for 3rd place. He would finish the season a career best 85th on the money list.

    He lost his card the following season after ending the year 163rd having only one top 25 finish. He would only play two more full seasons on the PGA Tour in his career (2006 and 2007). He won back his card in 2005 after finishing 6th in the Nationwide Tour standings having registered two 2nd places and three 3rd place finishes. Smith became eligible for the Champions Tour at the end of the 2014 season.
