Born in Stuart, Florida in 1986, Fathauer studied at Martin County High School, as did his twin brother Daryl, who played at the Ginn sur Mer Classic with him, in 2007. In 2008, Fathauer qualified for the US Open. At the event he finished in 68th place overall, and third out of all the amateurs who were competing. Throughout his amateur career, Fathauer had a reasonable amount of success at the U.S. Amateur throughout the years. He made the quarter finals in 2007 and 2008. Fathauer also had a fairly successful time at the Palmer Cup, although the US team lost the competition overall.

After turning professional in 2008, Fathauer had a successful time at qualifying school, and earned his card for the PGA Tour for the following season. Having missed the cut in the first tournament of his PGA Tour career, Fathauer made the cut for the first time at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Fathauer achieved his first win as a professional at the Web.com Tour Championship in 2014. This meant that he was fully exempt on the PGA Tour for the 2014-2015 season.

As of the end of 2014, Fathauer was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $138,625.
