Mastering Greenside Golf Bunker Shots (Video) - by Pete Styles

So you’re joining me now in this bunker, now it’s quite a wet sand bunker as well which for a lot of people probably is one of the toughest shots in golf, and particularly because we’ve got a flag that’s quite close to us. Now I think for a lot of people when they get themselves in a bunker, there’s a couple of different issues that come to light. A couple of things might relate to the actual technique that you need to use for a bunker shot, but for a lot of golfers its actually they’re in a bunker once the mental approach, that when they get into a bunker, they get mentally scared of trying to hit the shot. Now we know that bunkers are hazards, but actually if you watch golf on the TV you’ll notice that sometimes golfers almost deliberately aim or almost ask their ball to get into the bunker. Because professionals and good elite amateur golfers are almost so good out of bunkers they’d rather be in a bunker than for example long rough. So if you see a tour player, they’re aiming for the green obviously, but if they miss the green and the ball starts to head out there towards the bunker, towards the long grass, quite often they’re asking the ball get in the bunker. Get in the bunker.

They’d rather be in the bunker. Because generally in the bunker you know what sort of lie you’re going to get, and they’d rather be here than in the long rough, because in the long rough the ball might sit down or even sit up which can cause more difficult problems. So sometimes a good player would rather be in a bunker. Now they know they’re going to get a decent lie, they’re going to know how they can spin the ball; there is no sort of ball buried or ball sitting up on top of the grass like they might be through in the rough. And from these lie as long as you use the appropriate technique, they should be able to get to get the ball out fairly close. And a lot of good golfers, guys that you see on TV, they’re getting up and down out of bunkers more than 50% of the time, more than half the time. They’re knocking this ball out on to the green and then holing the putt. There is a fairly specific type of bunker shot technique that we need to use in a bunker and that is quite different to a normal shot that you would chip or pitch from grass. So these next few videos are going to explain how the specific bunker shot can work for you and hopefully help you master these difficult greenside bunker shots.
