Greenside Bunker Lies Tip by PGA Teaching Pro Ged Walters

Not every time we landed a green side bunker, did we get that perfect lie. Um, sometimes we get this one here where it's been raining and it's really compact and hard sand so it just sits on the top. Sometimes we get the plugged lie and then other times you hit that perfect shot. It looks like it's going to land on the green and it doesn't bounce, and when you get up towards degree and you see it plugged in the face of the bunker. How are we going to approach them?

Well, let's take a look. Let's start with this one here, our traditional plugged lie. Now with this one here, the important thing is to maintain our normal setup. We're going to go with our wider stance, we're going to go with our knees flexed more to lower the center. The change we're going to really make is normally we would open the face a little bit to expose the bounce, this time we want the leading edge. We're going to use the leading edge to scrape the sand away, and that's going to scrape the ball out. The key to making sure that we keep the pressure on that lead side, and again, you know, we're throwing the club with the right hand into the sand.
