Purdy was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1973. After graduating from Brophy College Preparatory in 1992, he sent on to study at the University of Arizona where his major was in finance. Since turning professional in 1996, Purdy has played on the Nationwide Tour, Asian Tour and the PGA Tour.
In 2007 he played on the PGA tour but did not perform well enough to keep his place on the Tour for the following season. Although Purdy quickly returned to the PGA Tour for the following season, he has achieved only a limited amount of success since. In fact, after having problems with his form on the PGA Tour he even worked for a short time representing a custom car company. In 2013, while playing on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica, Purdy achieved his first win in professional golf for eight years, at the Abierto Mexicano de Golf. Since then he has spent much of his time playing on the Web.com Tour.
Away from the course, Purdy is a family man. He and his wife Arlene live in Phoenix with their children. Purdy is the founder of the Ted Purdy foundation, which makes donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, A Stepping Stone, and Arnold Palmer's Children's Hospital.
As of the end of 2014, Purdy had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $7,376,174.
