He initially played golf at the University of Oklahoma before transferring to Johnson and Wales University in Florida. While attending the Johnson and Wales University, Renner claimed the NAIA Championship in 2005. He turned pro shortly after graduating in 2007. He played on the various mini tours for a number of years before he earned his card for the 2012 seasons on the Nationwide Tour. He had a solid rookie season on the second tier Tour, finishing in the top 10 three times including having a 3rd place finish at the Rex Hospital Open. He finished the season 59th on the money list, not enough to earn a PGA Tour card. Renner finished 2013 in 17th position on the Nationwide Tour and hence secured his first ever PGA Tour card. He had four top 10s including a runner up finish at the Colombia Championship where he briefly held the lead on the final day before losing out to Patrick Cantlay.

In his rookie season on the PGA Tour, Renner made the cut in 9 of the 23 event she played. He registered five top 25 finishes including three top 10s. His best result came at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am where he shot a final round of 67 to finish one shot behind Jimmy Walker. He finished the season 121st on the money list and therefore just about retained his card for the 2015 season (top 125 places retain their card). He has had a disappointing season thus far in 2015, having only made six cuts in twenty one events. He has not registered a single top 25 finish this season
