Build A More Controlled Backswing For More Consistency – by PGA Pros Pete Styles & Matt Fryer

In this video tip PGA golf professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer lead you through the fundamentals of how your golf swing length can have a dramatic impact on your golf swing by focusing on consistency and, therefore, helping to improve the dispersion and consistency of your overall golf shots. Many golfers are unable to understand the correct swing length and therefore make a golf swing that is too short or too long, specifically on the backswing. This can adversely affect the positions they are able to achieve and, in turn, this will result in mis-hit and inconsistent golf shots.

So one of the things I see when walking up and down the driving range in the guys you tend to hit a bit more of a poor shot seeing is to be a common theme that we see very long golf swings Pete sort of a guy I think they've been in the bar before having a few drinks because they are falling all out of control with this golf swing as they go through it. Yeah it's fair point is a fair point I think you could probably watch a lot of golfers around the golf course and see that their swings are very different lengths, and most often from the coaches perspective I would say they are on the long side rather than short. Yes solves that generally have a swing that we deem as too short possibly because of an injury or lack of flexibility mobility and they lose distance but they generally don't lose control they're pretty straight pretty accurate, yes with their short swings. When we go the other way we swing too long we see the out of control positions you alluded to there we see the lack of balance through the ball we see the lack of consistency of the shots they hit and I'm not convinced we get the trade off of more distance that they're probably searching for, but yeah seems like a lot of wasted effort almost.

Yeah I think there's a rule of no more thought process that if I set it to this the further back I go the further the ball's going to go in that direction. Not true not true at all. So yes we want to full swing and we like to generate a little bit apparent in the back swing but we have to have some some parameters definitely. So at a point if we were talking about back swing height what would we be looking for now in something that would be going to would it be a certain point we try to do. I think one thing that I see on telly when I watch a lot of the golf parallel if we looked at parallel if you just looked onto this camera where we would be at. Parallel at the top of the back swing parallel to the ground would be all the way around about here it would be but that is the 3 o'clock being on a clock face 12 o'clock being vertical. 1, 2, 3 o'clock would be parallel to the ground and to my mind that should be for most golfers the end the top of it. You will see some players on the T.V. particularly long hit that go a little bit beyond maybe past 3 particularly drive but conversely you see a lot of golfers who hit the ball plenty but of John Roberts brings to my mind by many to swing the airing of 2 o'clock and still rips the daylights out of going to say someone who springs to my mind the Champion Golfer of the year Eduardo Molinari very much I'd say 3 quarter golf swing it looks like.

So you said a shorter back swing I mean jumping off the title would all turn away or slow learner and I think Molinari game is based around that sort of hitting plenty of fairway hitting plenty of greens keeping the ball play well maybe some of the longer hitters have slightly more longer swings, but they maybe do spray it. Now for most club golfers I think would also suggest that accuracy is a premium over distance. So utilizing that for space idea what I would suggest you go do spend time from there or even a video camera we have set up here from look at the clock face. Depending on your age your flexibility your background of injuries and the standard of golf as well you are anything between 1 o'clock and 3 o'clock I would deem acceptable so shorter than 1 o'clock would probably gonna lose power. On the clock really good so I'm in the Green Zone everything by 2 o'clock deal 3 o'clock to limit anything beyond 3 o'clock I think is too far. The priority I think their Matt rather than length is width. We see a lot of golfers that focus solely on the length of their swing and they would say look at about 3 o'clock is that about right am I going to have a long way. Well not here you know it's the right leg but it's now right you can see here my elbow are bent close to my body from coming in my club cuts below my ears. That is not quite no real depth. So why would push that club up a lot deeper as much as just that a lot wider and less on the lead on along swing of them but I'll remember that you're the one that is twice as powerful.

Definitely when you when you get into that position and this is one of the things I hear a lot from my lessons there when you just go back up to the top for me. It feels tight and compact I would imagine you feel like you're really twisting that towel almost In feel like you're ready to fire into the golf course you're probably going to still generate a good one and probably sometimes even more more distance through that. Yeah you'd almost argue that the more comfortable is the better more torque created that they can hear my voice that's not comfortable but it's powerful but if I did that I could stand there and to hold not not comfortable but like no pressure and your and then a good turn through is going to be a much more consistent and stable way of striking the golf ball, and creating some distance. Rather than making the long loose ragged swing that does match the drive stop you sometimes see too often on the right actually, and so if you're looking for more consistency in your golf and especially in direction and control over the golf ball. Let's see how far firstly you are swinging it and let's see if we can just shorten it a cinch lightly while still feeling nice and wound up and tight and hopefully from there we're going to say some more consistent golf swings.
