Something that you’ll hear at every single driving range that you go to is someone telling another person to keep their head down or to keep their head still. It is something which is progressed and which is morphed into a whole different animal than when this teaching method was first introduced probably over more than a hundred years ago by early teaching professionals. And certainly keeping your head still throughout the golf swing can seem to give quite big advantages. However, if you have a look at lots of different players, it’s very easy to see that actually head movement can be varied and it doesn’t have to be in just one static position all the time. However, what is head movement throughout the golf swing and what is it you need to be looking for to see if your head is moving around?

Now, first of all, the first thing is really – is that your head does not move itself. If your body stays still and your head moves around, you have a much bigger problem than something technically wrong with your golf swing. The head will move because the body moves it. So that would indicate that there’s an issue with posture and there’s an issue within the golf swing which is raising the level of your head up and down. For example, the head movement will travel upwards in the backswing if the knees start to lift and the spine starts to lift. It will also move downwards in the downswing if the opposite is true. If the knee is dipped and the spine angle increases. These are reasons as why the head will move throughout the golf swing. But what we’re going to look out in these series of videos is exactly what the advantages are of keeping the head still and what some of the advantages are of actually seeing the head move throughout the golf swing as well.
