What Is The Correct Swing Tempo In Golf (Video) - by Peter Finch

What is the correct swing tempo in golf? Now a correct swing tempo can be very individual to each player who has their own unique actual tempo and rhythm to the swing. But the most important factor is, whatever your tempo, whatever the rhythm to your swing you must have the ability to get the swing working in the correct sequence. Now the correct sequence of the golf swing is when the hands take the club back followed by the arms and the shoulders, and then a rotation to the top of the swing with the last thing moving the right hip just rotating around slightly. And then on the down swing that’s reverse, so the right hand begins to turn, the arms, the shoulders begin to follow then the arms and then finally the hands and the club comes through impact. Now many players can produce this sequence at a very fast swing, something moves out of tempo, something moves out of line and therefore the tempo will be too fast. Your tempo will be something you are comfortable with but also something that you can actually move through the ball and get the actually sequence 100% correct.

Now to practice this and getting the sequence absolutely correct you can start off with slow motion swings. So a very slow motion swing would be moving back, the hands, the arms, the shoulders, the body then the hip at the end and then through with the hip, the body, the shoulders, the arms and the hands. So at that pace its very easy to control, gradually just build the swings up and you’ll soon find that you’ll be in a position where you get to a point where its slightly too quick and something will fall out of line. At that moment just regress, just kind of regress just slightly to the swing before where the tempo was perfect and that was the quickest that you could move, getting the sequence of events moving together. So although tempo is a very unique thing, it’s a very individual thing. There will be a point where you can’t move any quicker without going out of sequence. Find that point in your swing and you’ll have a perfect tempo.
