What is the correct arm rotation through my golf swing? Now the rotation of the arms throughout the back swing and the through swing are crucially important because they add power but more importantly they actually square the club face up at the point of impact. Without correct arm rotation, the ball will be flying mostly off to the right hand side, if you rotate too much also off to the left hand side. Now throughout the swing the arms almost work in a sly kind of mirror image of each other, on the back swing, the left arm mostly in control of the back swing with the left arm, actually gets to a point where it reaches level with the right arm before swinging up and actually achieving position where it crosses over.

On the down swing, again the arms approach a point where they are level at impact, and there is the right arm which takes over, crosses over the left and then finishes in a full position. Now controlling this rotation is a key to get in that club face square. Now there’s a couple of drills you can actually use probably the easiest one, is just to control the impact position from half way back to impact to half way through as well, just a little half swings so you get an idea of what you should be doing. Now on the way back, just take you to a point where the arms are level. So if you can see here the arms are level which each other, the toe of the club is at the sky, to the point of impact where the arms are level and the club face is pointing down at your target line to half way after impact where the arms are level again and the toe of the club is pointed up to the sky. And just having lots of these little half swings will help you understand, and will help you control the way you actually rotate your arms throughout the golf swing. Now use lots of those little drills, lots of those little drills to begin with and then start to build it up to a full swing and you’ll understand how to implement it a little bit better. One thing you don’t want to be doing or freezing the arms out and keeping them nice and stiff, if you do this you’ll lose a lot of the natural rotation that you should be having within the arms and you won’t be able to square the club face consistently and you also won’t be able to release the power into the ball that you should be doing. So next time you’re on the range, use that little drill, understand how to rotate your arms and hopefully you’ll add a little bit more power and a little bit more consistency to your strike as well.
