Tips to Avoid the Dreaded “Chili-Dip”, Golf (Video) - by Pete Styles

Now the Chili-Dip or the fat chip shot is often one of the most frustrating shots in golf, you have got yourself in a nice position, you are just around the side of a green just a little easy flick on and then putt for a par, but as you sets up to the ball little doubts creeps into your mind that I am going to try and lift this one, I am going to trying to get this one up and on to the green and that sets the problems in motion because now your hands starts to come behind the ball, now your body weight starts to come behind the ball, now you try and hit up on to the golf ball and there is the problem you will hit the ground first and the ball does not fly, it looks and it sounds like this one. When we capture the ground here half way over the golf ball lose power, it’s going to do two things, it’s going to go fat and into front bunker where I am about to bounce it off the turf and thin it and skull it right away through the green on the other side, the Chili-Dip or the fat chip shot.

The way to get out of this is often just by manipulating your setup slightly differently, would like to play the ball little bit more towards the back thirds of the stance, so center to back third of the stance. Gripping down with the hands but also leaning the hands forwards nicely ahead of the golf ball. Positioning a lots of body weight into the left thigh, so positioning the body weight here on to the front foot for the right handed golf on to the left foot, keep the right feet steady on the floor but quite light, nice little short back swing now move to the left even more, just make sure there is never a backward leans trying to get underneath the golf ball a last minute, if we can take the body weight and lean forward as we strike the ball will get a much clean contact hitting ball and then in the turf, it’s in the turf isn’t the problem, it’s hitting the turf first that’s the problem. If you can get your setup right, move forward as you strike the golf ball hopefully those Chili-Dip or those fat chip shot will become a thing of the past.
