The Role Of A Golf Ball (Video) - by Pete Styles

Golfers often want to have their cake and eat it when it comes to selecting a golf ball. Now a golf ball cannot be all things to all people at the same time because we want the golf ball to do lots of different jobs. Off the tee, we want the ball to go as far as possible and as straight as possible, but generally when we get around the green we want the ball to actually not go that far, we want to control the ball. We want the ball to spin, we want the ball to feel soft and sound soft and when we are putting it we want the ball to feel soft off the club face as well. Now that’s asking the golf ball to do two completely different jobs because off the tee we want to go far and off the putter we want it to go soft and a short distance and the ball can’t do everything.

So it’s important as a golfer when we choose our golf ball, we understand what the ball can and can’t do and we prioritize what we need it to do in our game. Now for a lot of golfers when they get round the green, they want that soft feel, high spin and that might sound brilliant, I will land the ball on the green and check it by like the guys do on the TV that sounds great. But what golfers often don’t understand is if a ball is going to be high spinning around the green, it is also going to be high spinning off the tee. Now high spinning off the tee does not just mean back spin, it also means that it’s going to be more susceptible to having side spin or tilted back spin imparted on it which means it’s going to curve more. So if you use a premium soft ball really spins around the green, chances are you’re going to see more curvature in the flight either deliberately or accidentally. Likewise if you use a very hard distance focused ball, it will spin less off the tee which might mean it flies a little bit low and a little bit straighter but you will probably find when you get to the green it spins less on the green and actually feels a little bit harder on the putter face. Now you can put buy a very expensive, premium $4 per golf ball, ball, you will generally find that ball has a decent mixture of distance off the tee and spin around the green but not every golf ball can be all things to all people all of the time. When the golfer chooses the golf, it’s very difficult to have your cake and eat in it all at the same time.
